Storyboard Text

  • Osaka, Japan
  • Hello Tod! How have you been? I haven't seen you since last year.
  • Pretty good. Work's been busy.  I love teaching, although it can be tiring from time to time.
  • I completely understand you. My students are full of energy every day. And they ask a lot of questions!
  • I agree with you. Today, we were talking about movies and they were shocked that guns are quite common in our country.
  • They couldn't believe it! I explained to them that  is normal to own guns in the US, especially if you are from the countryside.
  • I can imagine. I lived on a farm and my dad is a hunter. My students were shocked as well when they discovered that I know about guns, and how to maintain a gun properly.
  • I told them that guns, at least in the countryside, are used to protect livestock and for hunting. But they just didn't get it.
  • It's quite obvious. A Japanese person can live its entire life without ever shooting a gun.
  • However, my students were stunned when I told them that I had a car in high school and I drove to high school starting at 16.
  • Really? My students were surprised too.  I started a little bit later when I was 16.  It is still younger than in other countries.
  • The social relationships here in Japan are different from those from the US. When I was young,  kids would hold hands, or kiss eachother.
  • Yes, you are totally right. It would be strange to see two kids holding hands in public.
