Divina and Ratko Maslenjak were Bosnian Serbs during the Bosnian Civil War. Ratko was an Officer in the Army that committed acts of genocide such as the Srebrenica Massacre.

In 1998, Divina Maslenjak interviewed with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service under oath. She claimed that her husband was not in the military and that her family was being persecuted.
Ratko was arrested by ICE when it was discovered he had lied on immigration documents about serving in the Army.
Soon after, Divina applied for Naturalization, and falsely claimed on the document she had never lied to an official. Her application was granted and she became a citizen.
But, when her husband was about to be deported, she admitted she had lied to officials about his service to gain refugee status.
Divina was indicted in violation of 18 U.S.C. 1425(a). The Jury was told that her lies did not need to be material to her naturalization and she was convicted.
