Odysseus's crew get hungry after long days of being on the island and they end up eating the cattle even though Odysseus told them not to. Odysseus's men were killed in a storm as a punishment from Zeus.
Odysseus was left alone and drifted through the sea until he got captured by Kalypso which leads to where he was at the beginning of the story.
