After helping America with their revolution, and previous kings spending money recklessly, King Louis XVI is finding that France's banks are empty, though not his fault.
The Death of King Louis XVI
Because of the loss of money, Louis called a meeting of the Estates-General. This special assembly was made up of three groups, or estates, the clergy, the nobility, and the common people. The third estate thought they wouldn't get a fair vote because they were lesser people than the rest, so they left.
When the third estate left their meeting place, they went to an indoor tennis court on the palace grounds. The named themselves the national assembly and swore the 'Oath of the Tennis Court', kicking off the revolution.
After the king tried to flee for fear of his own safety, the people caught him and cut off his head.
