I think they are still in the building! Someone help!
Feeling guilty and dishonest, Johnny decides to share with Ponyboy and Johnny that he wants to go home. Johnny knows the right thing to do is to go home and turn himself in. He realized how this whole situation was unfair for Ponyboy, and he should face the consequences for killing Bob.
Johnny learns and accepts the fact that his parents aren't even worried about him and don't miss him. As much as this news hurts him, Dally helps him to realize that he doesn't need them. He has the gang and they will always be there for him and will support him even though his parents don't.
More about Dally's past is revealed. He usually doesn't share about his life and what it was like before he was a greaser. He decided to share because he wanted to make sure the boys understood what happened once you get caught by the fuzz and go to jail. Dally wants to make sure Johnny makes the right decision. Once they got back to the church there was a large crowd around it. To their surprise, the building had caught on fire! Smoke as gray as the night sky was emptying out of the building.
Ponyboy! You scared me half to death. Thank goodness you are okay.
After hearing someone yell that there were still kids in the church. Ponyboy and Johnny hastily ran like cheetah's into the burning building. They suspected that they had started the fire, so they felt responsible to save the kids. At this point, their main priority was saving the kids, rather than saving themselves.
The kids were safe, but the boys weren't in the best condition. Ponyboy was doing better than Johnny and was heading to the hospital. In the ambulance with him was one of the people from the fire. The man explains how Johnny's jacket saved his life and what had happened. The whole time Pony was just worried about Johnny.
Back at the hospital, Ponyboy is reunited with his brothers. Then, for one of the first times in his life, Pony saw Darry cry. That made Pony realize that Darry really did love and care about him. He was just always hard on him because he cared. This whole situation made Darry nervous that he would lose someone else he loved, and that scared him.
