After the Doctor found out that the family had found a pearl, he offered to help cure the baby. This is an internal conflict for Kino because a part of him is wondering if the doctor is just doing this for money or if he actually wants to cure him.
Later that night, Kino wakes up to someone trying to steal his pearl, and this is a Man vs Man external conflict because KIno and the unknown man begin to fight.
Steinbeck uses numerous conflicts throughout his novel "The Pearl" in order to develop the plot of the story. The conflicts add drama and intensity to the plot of the story that intrigue the reader as to what may happen next.
