I didn't know they were his.
Zero confesses to Stanley that he stole the shoes and didn't know they where 'Sweet feet's" shoes. Zero told Stanley that he just picked them right up from a homeless shelter and ran away with them. Zero took JUST what he needed, not what he wanted.
Flashback: Zero is running with the shoes on is feet when he hears everybody saying, "Wheres' the shoes?!". After that he suddenly heard a siren from a police car. He kept running and running.
If I had of just kept those old, smelly sneakers, neither of us would be here right now.
Zero kept running and after a while he found a parked car. Zero tried to untie the shoes as fast as he could. He took the shoes off after untying and put them on the parked car. Then he ran as fast as he could but days later, he got caught.
As Zero and Stanley are laying at the top of the mountain, Zero kept saying how he didn't mean to steal 'em, he just took what he needed. At that age Zero didn't know what stealing was, so he just took 'em.
I didn't know it was stealing, I just took 'em.
Stanley is walking minding his own business below a bridge. When suddenly a pair of white sneakers fell from the sky and hit him right on the head. He picked them up and recognized them, they were Clyde Livingston's shoes.
After Zero confessed, they are laying on the top of the mountain and snacking on onions in what they would think as "Paradise" at this time in life. Zero just had to say one more thing and this is what he said........
