Two girls had grown up together, went to the same school, lived near each other, and had been best friends since kindergarten. Both girls admired the other for their immense mental strength and the ability to not let things get to them.
Little dd each know, the other was suffering from depression and anxiety brought about by the usual burdens of growing up, AKA "the high school things".
While they were still close and spent almost everyday together laughing about nothing, both exuding a seamless facade. Neither suspected anything wrong with their fearless best friend.
Eventually they had both graduated high school, both planning to attend colleges, and would be separated for the first time in their lives. They shared a common fear- being alone.
One night, while away at their respective universities, the best friends are talking, but this time-really talking. They are sharing their fears, personal thoughts, histories with depression, all for the first time. They shared how they are both terrified of the future and if they could turn back time and be those two girls plying in the sandbox once more they would not hesitate.
If it were even possible, the girls got closer. They felt as if they could understand each other on a deeper, more meaningful level. Through expressing their fears and finally letting everything that was bottled up finally out in the open- they felt peace. This did not make their fears go away, but it satisfied the need to be heard and cared for by someone they love.
