  • Peripeteia: The hero's experience of a reversal of fate or fortune. Oedipus is found by a messenger instead of dying on the hillside
  • Prophecy 
  • Anagnorsis: The moment when the hero makes an important discovery. Oedipus finds out about the prophecy
  • Hmph.. There's no way!
  • Prophecy
  • Hamartia: A hero's flaw that leads to his tragic downfall. Oedipus is in denial about the prophecy
  • Hubris: A hero's extreme pride and disrespect for the natural order of the world. Oedipus flees to Thebes to escape his prophecy.
  • I'm never going back
  • RRRR!!!
  • Nemesis: The unavoidable fate of the hero, usually caused by his own hubris. Oedipus kills his father, fulfilling the prophecy
  • Catharsis: The audience's feelings of pity and fear. The audience shows pity for Oedipus after he gauges his eyes out
