Gandhi was asked to give up his first class seat to a white passenger and move to third class, and when he refused, he was thrown off the train.
Gandhi led a protest against the Salt Acts which said Indians could not gather, make, or sell their own salt. They had to buy it from the British.
During a visit to a troubled area, a Hindhu extremist who was upset about Gandhis tolerance of Muslims shot him three times, killing him when he was 78.
