  • Rising Action
  • I wish for 200 pounds!
  • It is a cold, wet evening and Herbert White and his father are playing chess by a fire. Herbert's mother is knitting nearby and she remarks on a risky move that her husband makes.
  • Climax
  • Sargeant-Major Morris shows the Whites the monkey's paw that is supposed to grant you three wishes. Mr. White wants to keep it but the Sargeant strongly advises against it. He tells Mr. White to throw it in the fire like a "sensible man".
  • Falling Action
  • But I don't know how that would turn out...
  • Mr. White does not believe that the Sargeant's warnings are valid. He decides to wish on the monkey's paw for 200 pounds.
  • Falling Action 2
  • NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
  • A representative from Herbert's school comes to the White's house to tell them that Herbert was killed in a machinery accident. The school did not claim responsibility for the incident but they gave the Whites 200 pounds as a compensation.
  • Mrs. White gets the idea that they could wish on the monkey's paw again to try and bring Herbert back to life. Mr. White is unsure about this because he doesn't know what Herbert will look like or what consequences they will face for their wish.
  • There is a knock at the door and Mrs. White thinks it is her son back from the dead. Just before Mrs. White opens the door her husband makes the third and final wish on the monkey's paw and whatever is behind the door disappears.
  • Herbert mommy's coming!
