  • Rene was born on March 31, 1596, in La Haye en Touraine, a town in central France. He was the youngest of 3 siblings.

  • His mother died after a year after he was born. His father sent him and his siblings to live with their grandmother. At age 8, Descartes was sent to a Jesuit college.
  • At age 22, he earned a law degree

  • An influential teacher of his sent him on a course to apply for mathematics and logic understanding the natural world. This was also after he earned his law degree.

  • René became the first known modern philosopher. He made an important connection between geometry and algebra, allowing to solve geometrical problems by way of algebraic equations. He was the first figure in rationalism; a method of understanding the world based on reason as the means to attain knowledge.
