John Adams saw that there were strained relations between France and America and even though he had a miserable presidency, he wasn't going to let a war break out between these two countries. The reason these countries were in a war was because the French were making raids on American ships. He eventually normalized relations between the two countries.

In 1770 John Adams successfully defended the British solders involved in the Boston Massacre. There were 25 solders involved in the Boston Massacre. He defended the British because he wanted to ensure that the innocent parties were protected.

John Adams ran against Thomas Jefferson during the election. Adams favored a strong national government and felt that France was a grater concern to national security than Britain while Jefferson didn't agree. Adams came out on top with 71 electoral votes, while Jefferson received 68. Who ever got the least amount of votes would become the vice president to the president.
Adams served in the Massachusetts legislature from 1770-1774. He then was selected a member of the continental congress. He was competing against George Washington but he nominated Washington to be commander in chief and was part of the commite. The committe was known as the Deceleration of Independence.
