Storyboard Text

  • Charles Cooley: “Looking Glass Self”
  • Element 1: How we imagine we look to others
  • Her hair is straighter than mine, she must think my curly hair is ugly.
  • Element 2: How we interpret others’ reactions
  • Wow! that's a lot of food!
  • Oh no! He must think i'm fat!
  • Element 3: We develop a self-concept. A favorable reflection leads to a positive self concept, while a negative reflection leads to a negative self-concept.
  • I'm going to do so bad on this test. (she has a bad perspective so she fails the test)
  • I studied all night for this test i'm going to do so good! (she has a good perspective so she gets an A on the test)
  • Development of self is an ongoing, lifelong process. As you get older you grow emotionally and mentally.
  • We continually involve ourselves with the 3 elements and change our self accordingly.
