The Looking Glass Concept
This storyboard does not have a description.
Charles Cooley: “Looking Glass Self”
Element 1: How we imagine we look to others
Her hair is straighter than mine, she must think my curly hair is ugly.
Element 2: How we interpret others’ reactions
Wow! that's a lot of food!
Oh no! He must think i'm fat!
Element 3: We develop a self-concept. A favorable reflection leads to a positive self concept, while a negative reflection leads to a negative self-concept.
I'm going to do so bad on this test. (she has a bad perspective so she fails the test)
I studied all night for this test i'm going to do so good! (she has a good perspective so she gets an A on the test)
Development of self is an ongoing, lifelong process. As you get older you grow emotionally and mentally.
We continually involve ourselves with the 3 elements and change our self accordingly.
