  • In 1929, Nick Carraway, a World War I veteran, is receiving treatment for alcoholism at a psychiatric hospital. He talks about a man he admored, Jay Gatsby. Nick's doctor suggests that he writes his thoughts down, since writing is Nick's passion.
  • Nick Carraway has recently moved to NY from the Mid-West. He visits his rich cousin Daisy, and her husband, ​Tom Buchanan, for dinner.
  • During dinner, Nick learns that Tom is having an affair. He is also intrigued by mention of his mysterious neighbour, Gatsby. ​
  • Gatsby invites Nick to a party, and then to lunch. He later learns Jay been in love with Daisy for years. With Nick's help, Gatsby and Daisy are reunited.
  • Daisy attempts to leave Tom for Gatsby but can't bring herself to. While Daisy drives herself & Gatsby home from the city, she runs over Myrtle, Tom's mistress. ​
  • Gatsby is shot by Myrtle's husband in revenge. Daisy moves away as if nothing happened. The media paints Gatsby as Myrtle's lover and killer. Disgusted with the city and its inhabitants, Nick leaves. In the sanatorium, Nick finishes typing his memoir .
