In 1937, Amelia began making plans for a 27,000 mile flight around the earth's equator. She was to be accompanied by Fred Noonan.
Lockheed Electra 10E
By late June of 1937, Amelia and Fred had flown from Miami, to New Guinea. Their next stop was to be Howland Island, however- they were running low on fuel and shortly after, radio signals were lost.
Nobody knows exactly what happened to Amelia, Fred, and their plane. The most common theory is that they ran out of fuel and crash landed into the ocean, but nobody can ever say for sure.
