Storyboard Text

  • I think that  we need to create an extended republic ,so that a variety of opinions, passions, and interests would check and balance each other
  • We need to have a Grand Convention to make things work.
  •  James Madison, was concerned that state legislatures 􏰀were passing laws that violated individuals’ rights.
  • We need to have a 15 point plan!!!!
  • . Those in attendance at Annapolis during September 1786 suggested that the conversation be extended. They endorsed a “Grand Convention” of all the states in Philadelphia in May 1787 to discuss how to improve the Articles of Confederation.
  • Virginia Plan
  • New Jersey Plan
  • In total, 55 men showed up in Philadelphia to discuss revisions to the Articles. Thomas Jefferson later called these 55 men “demi-gods” for creating a lasting Constitution.
  • The fifteen-point Virginia Plan was presented to Convention delegates at the end of May to “revise the Articles of Confederation.”
  • The Virginia Plan introduced a new understanding of federalism and republicanism that was debated over the next two weeks. the New Jersey Plan, a state-based plan that vested more power in the states and argued that the Virginia Plan went too far, and the Hamilton Plan that wanted even more power in a national republic because the Virginia Plan did not go far enough.
  • On September 17, 1787, the last day of the Convention, the Constitution was presented and read aloud, delegates heard Benjamin Franklin’s “Rising Sun” speech, they signed  the Constitution and adjourned to the City Tavern, where they dined together and took a cordial leave of each other.
