Due to the witches prophecies, strain on Macbeth and Banquo's friendship is displayed. When Banquo says he cannot stop thinking about what the witches said, Macbeth lies and says he hasn't thought about them since.
On Macbeth's way to the King's room, he hallucinates a dagger. The dagger is leading him up the stairs towards the King's room.
When Macbeth reaches the King's bedroom, he finds the guards fast asleep with the drinks his wife gave them. He then enters the King's bedroom to find him asleep. When he creeps over to murder him the King starts to awaken and Macbeth murders him.
Macbeth returns to Lady Macbeth with the bloody dagger and feels horrible for what he has just done. Lady Macbeth is mad that he brought back the dagger and leaves to finish the job to frame the guards. When she returns she washes off her hands as if nothing happens and leads Macbeth to bed.
In the morning, Macduff arrives and goes to see the King. However when he walks into his room, he finds Duncan dead. Macbeth and his wife act as if they did not have a clue as to what happened and that they were asleep the entire time. Everyone thinks it is the guards who murdered him as they were drunk and could not remember anything.
Macbeth is announced King, just as the witches said.
