The boys realize that the bag belongs to the lighting-rod salesman, and they wonder why it's abandoned. Jim convinces Will to stay and solve this mystery.
"Will, I think we should go to back to the carnival to find out what happen to Mr. Fury."
"Why," said Will, "that belongs to the lighting-rod salesman!"
Will and Jim look at a merry-go-round that, according to the sign says out of order, but Jim goes on it anyway. A man named Mr. Cooger snatches the up and tells them their not supposed to be there. Mr. Dark tells him to put the down and a little bit about himself.
"Okay Simon, why don't you and your friend come back tomorrow," Mr. Dark says.
"Put them down," says Mr. Dark. "I'm Mr. Dark or the illustrated man, and who are you."

The boys run off and jump into a tree. They watch as Mr. Dark starts the merry-go-round. It runs backwards and Mr. Cooger is growing younger and younger. When he gets off, he runs across the field and the chase after him.
Miss Foley introduce the boys to who she thinks is her nephew Robert. Will blurts out that he has bad news, but then realizes he can't tell Miss Foley about Mr. Cooger. Instead he tells them that Mr. Crosetti is dead.
"Miss Foley, we have bad news...Mr. Crosetti is dead."
"Hi boys, this is my nephew Robert."
Jim whispers up to the top window and a small shadow moves. Will tries to make Jim leave and Jim tells him he must leave him alone. Robert or Mr. Cooger looks out at Jim and Will, runs upstairs, comes back, and throws Miss Foley's jewerly all over them. Jim takes off after him, and Will hears Miss Foley when she discovers all of her jewels are missing.
"Will leave me alone orelse Mr. Cooger will not come out."
