...once we take a bite, food enters our Digestive System. It prepares food to provide our bodies with energy and nutrients.
Did you know our entire digestive system is 20-30 feet long?
The first step is chewing. Chewing breaks down food and saliva has enzymes that help break it down, too.The second step is swallowing. Our tongue and special muscles help move food down the esophagus. The epiglottis automatically closes to keep keep food from going down the wrong way.
The food then goes to the stomach where it stays for about 4 hours. The acids in the stomach break down proteins that our bodies can use.
The small intestine works to continue breaking down food and then food absorbs into blood to be used as energy. The large intestine is where anything that can not be used by body goes and leaves body as waste.
