  • Zenger's Printing
  • Paper Burned 
  • Accused 
  • You wrote these lies about Cosby. 
  • John Peter Zenger had published an article criticizing and bashing the Governor of New York, William Cosby. 
  • Hamilton's Defense 
  • Because the article Zenger had written was bashing Cosby, Cosby ordered to have the article burned.  After the article was burned, Zenger got arrested. 
  • Jury's Decision 
  • Zenger's Printing 
  • Zenger got accused of making up lies and rumors about Cosby inside of this article. Even though, the things that Zenger was saying about Cosby were true. 
  • Life Without the First Amendment 
  • Zenger got the best lawyer known to New York too testify for him. Hamilton (Zenger's lawyer) told the jury to think about if the things were true. 
  • The Jury then realized that they were wrong for punishing Zenger for talking the truth. So then Zenger got out of trouble. This is a landmark that changed modern day things. 
  • Life without the first amendment you had no right to publish what you wanted. It had too go through people and get known and accepted. They had no freedom when it came to opinions.
