Storyboard Text

  • There are also a lot of camels and people to carry all the gold and food. Mansa Musa himself rode at the very front of the line
  • There are around 60,000 people on the hajj and most of these are slaves. Looks like we're setting off!
  • I am a Griot and I'm about to go to Mansa Musa's hajj to be a storyteller. A hajj is like a pilgrimage.
  • We took the existing trade routes to Egypt because it was the easiest.
  • Our first important stop on our way to Mecca history will be Egypt and we will have to cross the Sahara to get there. Egypt will eventually become very famous because Mansa Musa spent so much gold there that the value dropped.
  • Egypt
  • Salt was very valuable back then too so it was worth it's weight in gold
  • Oh, look!! That's Mansa Musa! It's really hard to see him in this sea of people. He not only buys a lot of stuff with his gold, but he also gives them out for free!
  • Money for you! You go trade with this salt! Who wants gold? Money for you! Do you want some salt?
  • YAY!
  • I promise to myself that I'm not going to meet any kings one the way back because I'm better than them.
  • Shhhhh.... prayer is going to start. This is a very important moment in a Muslim's life.
  • It took us a year to get back. By then, everyone's heard of Musa's wealth
  • And now we're home in this miserable weather. Oh, how glad we are that we're home. It's been so tiring!
