The Conflict is the man, Peyton Fahrquhar, standing atop a bridge, preparing for his hanging, which he hopes he can escape by freeing his hands and neck and diving into the stream below him. "The man's hands were behind his back, the wrists bound with a cord. A rope closely encircled his neck."
sThe theme for this story Is dont meddle in other peoples affairs. "Suppose a man - a civilian and student of hanging - should elude the picket post and perhaps get the better of the sentinal" This quote shows his plans to infiltrate the bridge.
The point of view in this story switches from third to first person throughout. "'Put it back, put it back!' He thought he shouted these words to his hands."
