  • She can't see or hear me!!!
  • You little devil!
  • NO! Eat off your own plate!
  • In this scene young 19 month old Helen Keller was found blind and deaf. Kate and Captain Keller had just finished talking to a doctor about Helen's sickness. The doctor said the it was just acute congestion in the stomach and brain. After he had finished diagnosing Helen he said that she would live and be fine. Captain Keller started to walk the doctor outside to his horse and wagon when Captain Keller heard Kate begin to scream. He ran inside to see what was happening, and saw Kate standing next to Helen's crib waving her hand in front of Helen's face. She was screaming and yelling because she had just found out that Helen could not see or hear her. When Kate waved her hand in front of Helen's face, Helen didn't even flinch, and when Kate started yelling and screaming Helen didn't move a muscle, and just laid there. The book then starts showing how Helen now lives being both blind and deaf. The book jumps forward to when Helen is 6 years old, and is playing with a pair of scissors trying to cut one of the servants eyes out. Kate runs out to get the scissors away from Helen, but just leads Helen inside the house with everyone else. Aunt Ev is in there saying that Kate and Captain should contact another doctor from the Perkins Institute for the Blind. When Captain Keller finally agrees to contact them the scene jumps to Annie at the Institute with Mr. Anagnos telling Annie that she can't do it and basically doubting her completely. Then the book tells about Annie leaving to go meet Helen.
  • When Annie gets to the Keller's homestead, Helen doesn't know Annie yet and has to get used to her. Annie knows that Helen can feel vibrations even though she can't see or hear. Annie goes up to the porch and drops her suitcase very hard so Helen can fell the vibration and know that there is someone there. After Helen does realize that someone is present she goes to inspect what dropped, and who it is. When Helen goes to try and open Annie's suitcase, Annie doesn't let her, but teaches her to ask for something; by raising her hand. When Helen finally understands what Annie is doing, she raises her hand and Annie lets her have the suitcase. Helen takes the suitcase and drags it up the stairs and into Annie's room. When they get up there Helen starts trying on Annie's clothing, Annie pulls out the doll and gives it to Helen. She then teaches Helen how to finger spell doll. When Annie takes the doll back Helen grabs it and smacks Annie in the face. Helen then grabs the key to the room and locks Annie inside. When Captain Keller finally finds out that Annie is stuck in her room, he gets a ladder and climbs up a to get Annie. When Annie gets down she sees Helen taking the key out of her mouth and dropping it down the pump.
  • Yes Helen Yes!!!
  • Wah Wah!
  • When Helen and Annie go back inside they get ready for breakfast. During breakfast Captain Keller and James are arguing about the generals in the battle at Vicksburg. Kate is just watching Helen, and not doing anything else. Helen is walking around the table putting her hands in everyone’s food. She is seeing what everyone else has on her plate. If she likes what they have she will grab it up with her hands and eat it. When Helen gets around the table to Annie’s plate Annie doesn't let her stick her hand it it. Helen begins to throw a tantrum and tries to put her hand in the plate again. When Annie won’t let her do it all of the other people start to get mad, and ask Annie if she will please just let Helen do it, “this once.” After that Annie knows that she can teach Helen manners and ask them all to leave the room. After they leave, Annie and Helen get into a big fight because Annie is trying to get Helen to eat off her own plate. When Helen doesn't Annie takes Helen and puts her in her seat. When Helen tries to get to the plate from all different directions, Annie finds a way to stop her and put her back. This happens over and over again until Helen finally stops trying. At this point Annie gets Helen to start eating off her own plate. Then Annie tries to get Helen to use her utensils. After a long time of trying Helen takes one bit of food with her utensils, but spits it out at Annie. Then Annie takes the water pitcher and throws it at Helen. They are in there for a long time more, and Annie finally gets Helen to eat off her own plate, with her utensils. When they both finally start coming out of the house, they both look terrible, but Annie can say that Helen ate off her own plate, used her utensils, and folded her napkin.
  • I love you Helen!
  • After the dining room scene, Annie figure out a way that she can teach Helen. She tells Mr. and Mrs.Keller that she can teach Helen if she can get alone with Helen. Annie asks them if she can please take Helen to the garden house to live together. While they are in there Annie teaches Helen manners, and how to be civilized. Annie is allowed to get Percy to help her while they are in the garden house. Annie gets Percy so she can finger spell to him and make Helen jealous. When Helen does get jealous Annie is able to finally teach her. Annie is able to get Helen to let her touch her and teach her. By the time the full 2 weeks was over Annie asked for more time, because she hadn’t opened Helen up yet. Annie knew that she could though. When Kate and Captain didn't agree to it she had to keep trying.
  • During this scene Helen has been throwing her napkin on the ground and going back to what she used to do. Helen repeatedly throws her napkin down, and when Annie realizes it she gets mad. Annie takes Helen’s plate away, but the parents tell Annie to put it back. When Annie does put it back Helen starts eating with her hands. After that Annie takes Helen outside and makes her fill the pitcher back up. At this point James realizes what he needs to do and finally stands up to his father. When James does this Helen and Annie are at the pump filling the pitcher back up. When they fill it up Helen splashes Annie with the water, and realizes something. Helen realizes as Annie is pumping the water that it has a name. Helen says wah wah, and realizes that water has a name and is a real thing.
  • After Helen says wah wah, Annie realizes that she has broken through to Helen. She is so happy that she has been successful. Annie says to Helen that she loves her. Annie has had a good time with Helen, and is so proud of Helen. She has  gotten through to Helen and successfully taught her how to communicate. Annie knows that she has done something that no one else has.
