In 1607 more than 100 passengers sailed on the James River and created English settlements in the New World. John Smith helped found and govern Jamestown.
There were a lot of dangers, such as Spanish warship, the natives, and the awful winter of 1609-1610.
Remarkably, the English kept coming for the hope that they could work off their debt and own a piece of land.
Some wanted to find success growing cash crops. In 1611, more than 500 settlers were dead, but somehow the colony survived.
The reason why so many colonists died was because of dirty water, no women to take care of them, and starvation. Also, they only brought 1 surgeon!
