Act 1 Scene 1

Storyboard Text

  • I can't wait to marry thee in 4 days, fair Hippolyta.
  • You have won me over with your bravery in battle! I cannot wait to join our two countries in marriage, Theseus.
  • Theseus, the King of Athens, and Hippolyta, the Queen of Amazonia, eagerly await their wedding day.
  • My lord, my daughter is not listening to me! She refuses to marry Demetrius and wants to marry Lysander. He has bewitched her! Punish her!
  • Egeus is angry at his daughter Hermia because he has given her permission to marry Demetrius but she refuses and falls in love with Lysander.
  • Demetrius says Hermia should marry him because Egeus gave him permission. Lysander and Hermia say that they are in love, so they should be able to marry each other. Theseus says the Egeus should get to decide his daughter's fate, so Hermia will have to marry Demetrius, become a nun, or die.
  • Hermia shall marry Demetrius, become a nun, or die!
  • Her father gave her permission only to marry me!
  • I love Lysander! I want to marry him!
  • I have won her over with presents and songs! She should marry me!
  • It does not matter. I have made my final decision. Hermia will have to decide whether to marry Demetrius, become a nun, or die. She will have to decide by my wedding day.
  • Lysander argues that he is just as worthy as Demetrius, but Theseus doesn't listen. He says Hermia will have to make her decision by his wedding day in four days.
  • I am just as worthy as Demetrius! I am just as rich, I have greater love and compassion, and I have Hermia's love.
  • Hermia and Lysander plan to get married in the woods in secret.
  • Do not worry my love. I have an aunt who lives in the woods. We can flee to her house and get married in secret tomorrow night.
  • That is amazing! I promise to meet you there. I promise on Cupid and Venus and all other love gods. I promise to be there.
  • This is so unfair!
  • Helena wants to know why Demetrius loves Hermia. Hermia doesn't know, and then tells Helena of their plan. Helena thinks to herself that if she tells Demetrius this plan, she will be rewarded and he will like her.
  • Hello Helena.
  • I don't know. The more I hate him, the more he loves me. Tomorrow night we will run away into the woods and get married, and you will have Demetrius all to yourself. Good luck!
  • Maybe if I tell Demetrius their plan he will reward me and trust me.
  • Why does Demetrius love you and not me, Hermia?
