Ahoy there! My name is Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and I conquered land for Spain in 1542. My goal as a conquistador was to explore the west coast of the "New World." I faced many challenges such as high winds and rough seas.
I made many accomplishments during my expedition. For example, I founded the first version of San Diego. I named it San Miguel. I also was the first person to chart all of California's coast.
Sadly, I died here, on San Miguel island. I slipped on some rocks and broke my arm, but it didn't stop me. However, a few days later on January 3, 1543, my arm was gooey and green. It was infected. That infection caused me to perish on an island that I had claimed for Spain. However, I made many accomplishments. A statue of me stands in San Diego, honoring me. Until we meet again!
