It is the day that they are given their life mandate. The Council of Vocation gives every child a job that they will do until they are old enough to go into the Home of the Useless. Equality wants to be a scholar but he is given the job of a street sweeper. "This was the only thing which moved, for the lips of the oldest did not move as they said: Street Sweeper"(Rand 26).
This is the first time that Equality saw Liberty. "Her hair was golden as the sun," Equality stated when he first saw Liberty (Rand 39).
Equality is in his cave when he accidentally comes across electricity. He thinks that if he shows the council of scholars this new power that they may accept him as one of them. He knows it is risky because it is from the unmentionable times.
This is the first time the Equality and Liberty talk to each other. This is important because it is against the rules for men and women to like each other or even interact if it isn't in the House of Mating. Equality has a weird feeling that he wants to take her to the house of mating but Liberty is only 17.
Equality truly discovers a light that can replace candles. He thinks that this can change the way that the council of scholars works and thinks.
