At the start of the story, Anton witnesses a Jewish woman getting beaten by a Nazi. During the fight, Anton is unable to help and the police do nothing to stop the fight.
Later that day, Anton overhear some men. They were talking about how every jew of Zborow would be taken from the town.
The next day, Anton starts to build a small shack. Reason being Anton has some Jewish friends that would need help.
That next day, Anton's friends then come over to start living in his shack. Anton would sneak food to them and clean up a bit. And that day Anton's neighbors came over in suspicion.
That night, the neighbors saw Anton hiding Jews so they started a gunfight. The neighbors and Mother were shot.
Anton then received a letter from his friend saying how they had to leave. They left because they thought that attention would be attracted to them. And so moral of the story, Always help people out even in your own times of debt.
