  • Goodmorning class!
  • I wonder what we will learn about animals today!

  • Please draw a picture of where you live.

  • Could an animal live here? Why or why not?
  • Some animals live in the sand!
  • Some animals eat grass!
  • The students have come into class and are waiting for instructions while the engaging animal representations are already set up around them to get them interested in the day's lesson.

  • A habitat is a place where an organism lives and gets what it needs. Animals an humans need some of the same things!
  • We all need food!
  • The students draw where they live and what they think they need.

  • I'm making sure my dog has enough space to run and play.
  • I'm making sure my panda has a forest for shelter.
  • The students walk around outside in groups and take note of what could be something an animal needs.

  • Great job today class! Now please complete this part on your own.
  • 1. What do I need to survive? 2.What does an animal need to survive? 3. Draw a cartoon that connects your answers.
  • The teacher leads a discussion to help the students connect what they discovered on their own with the specific definitions and background of what both animals and humans need to survive (food, water, shelter, and space in a suitable arrangement).
  • We all need water! 
  • The students build habitats in shoe boxes for the animals that include all of their basic needs.
  • The students answer questions about what humans need to survive, what animals need to survive, and then represent the similarities in their answers in a cartoon drawing.
