When the Persians invaded the Ionians, the Athenians knew they had to help because they're all Greeks. Even with the help of the Athenians The Ionians still lost. But the ruler of the Persians (Darius the great) was Mad that the Athenians steeped in and he swore revenge on Athens.
The Athenians surprisingly won at the battle of marathon. They were out numbered two to one by the Persians. But the Persians did not know how to fight against the Phalanx formation

The Greeks used there smaller stronger ships to ram the Persians larger less maneuverable ships. The Persians couldn't fight the Greeks ships. The Persians lost 400 ships and the Greeks lost only 40.
