In August of 1831, Nat Turner (a well educated slave and self proclaimed preacher) lead a slave revolt.
He lead around 70 slaves and freed blacks into the town of Southampton, Virginia. He claimed that he was sent by God to eradicate slavery. Turner and his crew viciously murdered nearly 60 whites within the town before they were put down by a local militia.
The impact that Nat Turner's rebellion had was that the South enacted stricter slave laws. The slaves were being treated bad before, but were treated even worse after this rebellion. It was adverse to civil rights before the Civil War
