Catholics were under harsh treatment and discrimination under Queen Elizabeth I and were forced to leave the country to practice their faith.
Hi I’m John Carroll, the first Bishop of Baltimore.
Due to the American Constitution and Bill of Rights, The United States of America allowed religions to practice their faith with freedom. So Christians decided to travel to the U.S.
So Catholics boarded ships headed to America in hopes that they would be able to profess their faith with freedom. Little did they know that it was going to be just as difficult to profess their faith.
People already living in America did not accept their faith and excluded the new foreigners from society. So the Christians had to find their own Bishop and form their own Church to worship their God.
Carroll helped bring Americans into the Christian faith and by the year of his death in 1815, he had grown the number of Catholics in America from 30,000 to 200,000.
Because of the growing number of Catholics in the United States, Protestants who considered themselves nativist to the country formed riot saying that Catholics where trying to take over the U.S. This made it hard for Catholics to practice their faith
