Once at the airport, Augustus goes off on his own and doesn't return for over 20 minutes. Hazel begins to worry and texts him many times, but her mother reassures her that he will return, and he does.
As the plane takes off, Augustus begins to get nervously excited and tells Hazel that it is his first time flying, but Hazel finds all of his excitement very cute. After Hazel's mom falls asleep, Hazel watches the movie 300 with Gus.
Their first night in Amsterdam, Peter Van Houten pays for Augustus and Hazel to have dinner at the very fancy restaurant Oranjee. Hazel and Gus receive free bottles of champagne and explain that drinking it is like "drinking the stars."
The next day, Gus and Hazel go to meet Peter Van Houten so he can answer their questions about his book An Imperial Affliction. However, Peter Van Houten turns out to be an inconsiderate drunk and insults Hazel about her cancer. Peter's assistant, Lidewij, is fed up with his attitude, so she quits.
Lidewij takes Hazel and Gus to the Anne Frank house as an attempt to make up for Peter ruining their day. Hazel and Gus share a passionate kiss in the house and, instead of getting annoyed, all the other people in the house cheer for them and their new love.
When they return to the hotel, Gus informs Hazel that he has had a cancer relapse and that he had been receiving chemotherapy before their trip, but it wasn't working. Hazel knows that this means Gus is going to die and bursts into tears.
