Jefferson and Madison wanted to fight the Alien and sedition Acts. They found a theory called States Rights. This said that states had the right to judge when federal government had passed a unconstitutional law.
The Democratic- Republicans took over Congress and repealed the Alien and Sedition acts.
The Democratic- Republicans wanted to form long lasting alliances.
Lest be friends for now but i don't think that will last forever.

The federalists did not like the States Rights. They wanted to keep the Alien and Sedition Acts in power but in two years Democratic-Rebublicans repealed this rule.
The federalists thought that the US needed to steer clear and stay neutral of permanent alliances.
