Act 1 begins in the kitchen where Walter, Beanetha, and Ruth argue about how the insurance money from Lena's dead husband is going to be used. Later Ruth finds out she is pregnant and wants to abort but Lena does not want to and encourages Walter not to enable her decision, she becomes disappointed when he agrees with Ruth.
In Act 2 Beneatha is sad about Walter losing her medical school money after Lena decides the money will be put towards his business and for their new home. Asagai consuls her by explaining that she should work for what she wants not wait for it to be handed to her and after asking her to marry him and move to Nigeria with him.
Finally Act 3 ends with the Youngers being told to not move to the new house in exchange for money which could help the situation, but Lena says no and the family finally understands each other to move to the new house.
