  • Through the setting the reader learns that Della and her husband are poor. It states that she sits on her shabby couch and that the doorbell is not working. The setting helps the theme because she needs to be poor in order to make the sacrifice.
  • Climax
  • Oh, I like the chain, but I sold my watch to buy you some combs for your hair
  • I sold my hair to buy you a chain for your watch.
  • Through the conflict the reader knows that Della only has one dollar and eighty seven cents to buy Jim a gift for Christmas. According to the text it states, " One dollar and eighty seven cents, that was all. The conflict leads toward the theme because Della needed to be poor, and have $1.87, in order for the theme to be, we sacrifice for our loved ones.
  • Resoulution
  • We can put our gifts away for now, until we can use them again.
  • The character influences the theme because if the story didn't have the characters then the story wouldn't have a theme because the characters create the theme from their actions and diolouge.
  • Theme
  • I sacrificed my hair for your gift.
  • I sacrificed my watch to buy you a gift.
  • Through the climax the reader knows that both Della and Jim sold their precious, valuable items to get each other gifts. The climax helps develop the theme because if Della never sold her hair, and Jim never sold his watch, the theme would change because they need to sell there precious items in order to have the theme, we are willing to sacrifice for our loved ones.
  • Through the resolution the reader knows that Della and Jim decide to put their gifts away until they can use them. This helps us develop the theme because Della and Jim gave up their precious items, and couldn't use them but they still love each other.
  • We are willing to sacrifice for the ones we love.
