Storyboard Text

  • Thomas Paine, "Common Sense" January 1776
  • To the British government & royal monarchy, I challenge to ask you what your authority is
  • We want independence!
  • Common Sense by: Thomas Paine
  • Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776
  • We have now written and approved the Declaration of Independence. Will all 13 colonies please sign!
  • CJ dela Paz Demetrius Nicholson
  • Published in 1776, Common Sense   challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy.  The language  Paine used helped the  common people also understand.  This was the first work published that  openly asked for independence from Britain.
  • Congress appointed Committee on Independence to prepare a statement shortly after Lee's Speech. Declaration had 3 major parts: preamble, List of 27 Grievances of the colonies, and Formal declaration of independence.  The Declaration was not addressed to England nor did the  U.S expect a response from the king.
