Storyboard Text

  • 1836 - East Cambridge Prison
  • This is Dorothea Dix, a reformer and advocate who made improvements for the mentally ill. She traveled all over the country to observe conditions of those in private and public institutions.
  • She entered the facility...
  • She was shocked to see the unsanitary, overcrowded and unorganized conditions of the facility.
  • This is unacceptable! The conditions for the mentally ill are horrendous. They need better conditions, they need help. They most certainly don't need to be locked up with violent criminals. I will take my observations and reports to the Legislature of Massachusetts to finally put a stop to this.
  • She brought her reports to the Massachusetts State Legislature, and shocked many people with the dark truth behind the institutions that held the mentally ill. With this report, Dix caused an uproar and started a movement. After her meeting with the Massachusetts Legislature, funds were put aside towards the first mental hospital.
  •  Those who were transferred to the new mental hospitals were grateful that Dorothea was able to give them a chance to get care for their illnesses. As well as the therapy with the mental hospitals, she began to distribute medication to patients. Dorothea Dix made a true difference in the treatment and conditions of the mentally ill, deeming herself a true reformer.
