There was no form of government to follow so there was a problem with them staying. The Virginia Company had given the Pilgrims a charter to settle in Virginia, but it was not valid for Plymouth. Men that were on the Mayflower decided to write a plan of government for their colony known as the Mayflower Compact. Promising to work together to make the colony succeed and agreed to consult one another about the laws.
The soil in the New England area was much rockey and couldn't lend itself fertile for cash crops. However, Small farms growing subsistence crops. aided the settlers with vegetables to live on. The settlers made a profit by fishing, whaling and the timber industries became the stable economy.
The difference between Jamestown and Plymouth was that Jamestown only had men when Plymouth had families. Also Jamestown had fertile soil and Plymouth had rocky soil, sense the land features they had to live different ways. Jamestown made money off of selling tobacco and Plymouth got money from fishing and whaling.
On November of 1620, The Pilgrims stepped foot on land. It was very difficult for the pilgrims to find food and shelter in the middle of winter. half of the colonists had died by the time spring arrived. The Pilgrims were told how to plant corn and other crops and how to trap animals for food and clothing by Samoset and Squanto. By fall the colony was saved, and to celebrate their success, they celebrated the first Thanksgiving.
The Pilgrims journey across the Atlantic Ocean was long and difficult for them. A storm had came and blew them off course, making them land much further north in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They decided to settle in the area and called it Plymouth.
