  • After WWII ended, Germany was split into fourths. Between the U.S., France, Britain, and Russia. Berlin, being the countries capital was also split into fourths.
  • Stalin decided in 1948 that he wanted all of Berlin back. Railroads, canals, and highways were all blocked all the way from western Germany, to western Berlin.
  • When Churchill and Truman heard about Stalin's ideas, they wanted to take action and quickly.
  • The Berlin Airlift came from this. The allied forces were supporting Germany by flying over food, water, and other supplies for the people of Berlin.
  • Because of the help from the allies, the people had a much easier time of gaining the resources they need when they needed.
  • May 12, 1949, Stalin lifted the blockade from Berlin to Germany. The allies and stalin still didn't get along, but enough for another battle to come from it
