After WWII ended, Germany was split into fourths. Between the U.S., France, Britain, and Russia. Berlin, being the countries capital was also split into fourths.
Stalin decided in 1948 that he wanted all of Berlin back. Railroads, canals, and highways were all blocked all the way from western Germany, to western Berlin.
When Churchill and Truman heard about Stalin's ideas, they wanted to take action and quickly.
The Berlin Airlift came from this. The allied forces were supporting Germany by flying over food, water, and other supplies for the people of Berlin.
Because of the help from the allies, the people had a much easier time of gaining the resources they need when they needed.
May 12, 1949, Stalin lifted the blockade from Berlin to Germany. The allies and stalin still didn't get along, but enough for another battle to come from it
