Madame Loisel has always believed and needed and deserved a better and fancier life than she was living.
Loisels husband came home one day with invitations to an extravagant party, but she was not happy at all. She was upset because she had nothing fancy to wear out and she didn't want to look poor around rich people.
Loisels husband gave her money to buy a new dress but she still wasn't happy. She claimed she had no jewelry to wear. Her husband suggested she borrow some from her friend that has more things than her and she agreed with the idea. Loiels visited her friend and borrowed a single diamond necklace.
When Madame Loisel came home from the party, she realized she had lost the diamond necklace that her friend lent her. Loisels husband went back and looked thoroughly, but they could not find it. Her husband and her then told her friend that they broke it and were getting it repaired, while they bought another one that mad them spend all of the husband inheritance and then some.
After buying the placement necklace and giving it back, they spend the next ten years trying to repay their debt. They lived in poverty and Loisel now worked and cleaned at the home herself instead of having a maid.
One day, after Loisels debt was payed off, she found her friend walking the street, and decided to go up to her and tell her about the necklace. Loisels friend did not recongise her, and when Loisel told her friend the story about what happened to the real necklace, her friend told her that the necklace was not made of real diamond. The necklace has been fake.
