  • France was broke
  • We want bread!
  • The Estate-General Assembly
  • The Oath of the tennis court
  • The french government was in debt because they recklessly spent money on the war and collected to little in taxes. Nobles had to pay almost nothing because the nobility had lots of power.  They collected lots of money from the peasants and gave little to the government. However, it was not  King Louis 16th's fault, the other kings before him did the reckless spending for him and gave him an abundance of debt to pay off.  He did not get much help from his wife queen Marie Antoinette who loved fine things and had very little sympathy for the poor
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • Due to the financial crisis that France was in, King Louis was forced to call a meeting of a special and exclusive assembly called the Estates -General.  The king had hoped that they would say to raise the taxes which would have put a quick end to the crisis if not for the nobles who didn't want to give up their privileges. They hadn't met since 1614. They wanted to meet according to the old rules so each estate would  vote themselves, however the third estate didn't approve of this proposal. 
  • Declaration of the Rights of man
  • They left their meeting place. At an indoor tennis court on the palace grounds they declared themselves the National Assembly. The members also swore the Oath of the tennis Court, promising to write a constitution for France. Members were still hopeful that the king would go along with them
  • The attempt of the flee
  • Louis hesitated, then he sided with the nobles. He called 18,000 soldiers to Versailles. On July 14, one group set off for the Bastille, a fortress and prison in Paris. at Bastille, the crowd demanded the governor give them his cannons and other guns. In the confusion of the battle broke out. the enraged crowd surged into the Bastille and killed the governor, soldiers, and other officials.
  • By the summer of 1789, the National Assemby was controlling the government of France. In the beginning of August it ended feudalism. This did away with all the special privileges of the noble and debts that the peasants owed them. The document statement of the revolution.  This assembly declared that all people had the rights of freedom and equality.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man
  • King Louis and Marie Antoinette attempted to flee Paris in a royal carriage as they were afraid that they would be killed.  However, they were stopped at the German border and returned back to Paris.
