- I'm not sure how to start this so I guess I'll just cut to the chase: I've been diagnosed with cancer. I don't know much more than that yet, but I'm probably going to miss some time from work.
- Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that, genuinely. I have several family members who have gone through that and wouldn't wish it on anyone. Obviously your first priority needs to be your health.

- I was actually diagnosed with cancer before, about 10 years ago. They have some additional tests to run and before I'll know what the treatment is.
- Well, the silver lining is that you know you can beat this and there are treatment options! Do what you need to do and just keep us in the loop once you know more. Did you talk to your manager yet?

- Not yet, I've got a lot of projects I'm working on now and don't want them to fall through the cracks. I'm worried about missing too much work and pay.
- No worries, I can fill him in for you. You've got other people in your department that can help with those, that's what teams are for. Don't worry about missing work, we can go over your options to cover your missed time and pay. That way you can focus on your treatment and recovery. Let me know if there's anything else we can do.
