At the beginning of the story, Crispin was alone. He had no one with him now that his mother was dead, and everyone hated him. He was very fearful and had no courage. People wouldn't even address him with his real name, only "Asta's son".
While Crispin is wondering along in a destroyed village, he stumbles upon a large man named Orson Hrothgar, or as he is more often called, Bear. This man makes himself Crispin's new lord.
Bear helped Crispin achieve many things, such as learning how to play the recorder and have fun.
At this point, Crispin has built up enough courage to disobey Bar and roam around the town of Great Wexly without permission.
Crispin fights and helps kill John Aycliffe. By now, he is brave, courageous, strong, and powerful. Crispin understands his true potential.
