  • I have chosen my bishops.
  • You will not get away with this! I alone have the power to chose bishops!
  • The king has chose his bishops, and the Pope is not happy about this because he believes that the Pope should chose the bishops.
  • You are no longer a part of the church!
  • The Pope has issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both church and secular rulers, that he lone had the power to chose bishops, he even claimed the power to remove emperors from the throne.
  • You are freed of your oaths.
  • They both appointed bishops and had conflicts over who had authority in both secular and church leadership. 
  • The Pope then excommunicated the king.
  • The Pope then freed the kings subjects from there feudal oaths of loyalty to the king.
  • Eventually, in 1122, the Church and the Holy Roman Empire reached an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. This agreement gave the Church the sole authority to appoint bishops.
