The Giver takes place sometime in the future. The setting is an utopian society. The main character is Jonas, an 11 year old boy. He lives with his parents and his younger sister, Lily. Jonas' best friend is named Asher. Jonas is about to turn 12. That is the moment when The Elders in the community will decide what job each kid will be given as an adult, based on their experience and interests. Jonas is worried about what he will be chosen to do.
1. Jonas' father brings Gabriel, a new baby boy, home. 2. Jonas notices that an apple "changes" for a second. 3. Jonas experiences the stirrings, which is similar to puberty. 4. During the Ceremony of 12, when the 11's are supposed to get their adult jobs, Jonas is skipped. He is finally called last and , then, he is given the job of The Receiver of Memory.
5. Jonas starts his training with the Giver. He also starts to see colors. 6. Jonas receives memories of love, death, war, suffering and happiness. 7. Jonas starts to feel separated from the values and learning that he has been taught his entire life. 8. Jonas becomes impatient and frustrated with Sameness and lack of choices.
During his training with the Giver, Jonas learns what "releasing" really means. It means to kill somebody. He also learns that his own father is one of the people doing the releasing. He gets very upset when he finds out that Gabriel will be released the next day.
1. Jonas makes a plan with the Giver to escape. 2. Jonas decides to take Gabriel with him, so he does not get killed. 3. For the first time, Gabriel and Jonas feel cold, hunger and fear. 4. Jonas uses his memories to protect them.
There is no definitive resolution to The Giver. At the end, through all the hardships, Jonas and Gabriel have each other, and a bond of love. The story ends with both of them sledding down a hill that Jonas was given a memory of, together.
