A solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the moon seems to cover the Sun. This is because the sun is 400x the size of the moon, and the moon is 400x farther away from the Sun. Now, you might be wondering" if the moon passes between the earth and the the sun every day, then why don't we have an eclipse everyday?" This is because the moon and earth's orbit is not circular, it is elliptical.This causes the moon and the the earth to not be able to be in the position and angle the causes a solar eclipse. the most recent eclipse was in 2017
During a total lunar eclipse, Earth completely blocks direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. The only light reflected from the lunar surface has been refracted by Earth's atmosphere. This light appears reddish for the same reason that a sunset or sunrise does. Did you know that a total lunar eclipse happens more often than a total solar eclipse. This is because the earth's shadow is bigger, so the umbral shadow is bigger, this means that the chances of seeing a total lunar eclipse is bigger.
To compare the 2 eclipses, the moon has to be at a certain phase to make the eclipse happen. the solar eclipse (on top) can only happen when there is a new moon in the sky. On the other hand, the Lunar Eclipse (on bottom) has to be at the phase of full moon. One thing that the 2 eclipses have in common is that they both happen 2 to 4 times each year.
