in 1840 Henry Oliver was born into iron, when he turned the age of two his family settled in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania.
Oliver worked at various jobs until 1861 when he served in the civil war.
In 1863, he formed a partnership with William J. Lewis and John Phillips. To manufacture nuts and bolts on a small scale.By 1880 two of his brothers joined.By this time the company was one of largest manufacturers of iron in the US.
in 1888 the company went under the name of Oliver Iron and Steel Company. Oliver helped to develop improved processes for steel making. He also improved and designed a blast furnace
much of his time was spent make new railroad routs for Pittsburgh. He also developed the steel freight car.
