Storyboard Text

  • Richard Pine is the protagonist in "Survival Type" . He is a round and dynamic character. Richard was a surgeon who was trying to smuggle heroin on his cruise, however, the ship gave way and sunk. Richard changes throughout the story and strives to survive until help arrives.
  • CHARACTERIZATION
  • Richard is all alone on this very small and limited island. He mentions that the island is "190 by 267 paces" small. The only possessions Richard carries with him are matches, a "diary' and pencil, and heroin.
  • EXPOSITION
  • Richard is in need of food and help. Richard comes across a gull, and tries to kill it with a rock. He shatters his ankle during attempted execution.  A plane flies overhead, Richard waves to get its attention, but no response.
  • RISING ACTION
  • Richard has to amputate his leg, for food and to release pain. He continuously takes doses of heroin to numb the pain. He uses heroin as an anesthetic throughout the "operation". Richard later amputates the other leg. Numb to the pain, Richard still has found no help and begins to become mentally unstable.
  • CLIMAX
  • Richard has now become almost lifeless. He has lost all mental stability and is missing multiple parts of his body. He ate the amputated limbs, but could no longer survive.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Richard has died, leaving the diary on the island. He dies sometime, most likely in March. We can infer this because he spent all of February on the island and titled his last diary entry with "Fe/40?".
